This Listing = Simos 12.2 ECU Only

The 2013–2014 GLI was a transition year — some got the older EA888 Gen 1 (Simos 18 / different file), and mid-2013.5+ got the new EA888 Gen 3 with Simos 12.2 ECU. You MUST verify your ECU before ordering. See verification guide below.

Simos 12.2 ECU Verification Guide

Before ordering, verify your car has the Simos 12.2 ECU. This is the fastest way to confirm the correct file.

Where the ECU Is Located

  • Engine bay, near the battery and fuse panel
  • Under the plastic cowl at the base of the windshield
  • Inside the ECU protective box/cover

Location can vary slightly by production date and market. If you don’t see it immediately, check under the cowl/ECU box area.

What To Look For

  • A printed label/sticker on the ECU housing
  • Text indicating Simos 12.2
  • Full ECU part number and Bosch / Siemens markings

Best practice: take a clear photo of the full label and keep it for your records.

Quick Verification Steps:

  1. Park the car, engine off, keys away from the vehicle.
  2. Open the hood and locate the plastic cowl area near the base of the windshield.
  3. Remove the rubber weatherstrip if needed, then lift/remove the cowl cover (basic trim clips).
  4. Locate the ECU box cover and open it to expose the ECU.
  5. Find the ECU identification label on the ECU housing and confirm it says Simos 12.2.
  6. Take a clear photo of the entire label (no blur, no glare) and send to BDT with your order.

If you’re not comfortable accessing it, any shop can confirm the ECU label in minutes. Verification prevents wrong-file orders.

⚠️ SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: Windows PC or laptop required for remote flashing. 50+ Mbps internet8GB+ RAM • TeamViewer installed. Mac is not supported at this time.

How Remote Tuning Works

Flash your GLI from home — no shop visit needed.

1

Schedule Your Flash — After purchase, scan the QR code or contact BDT to book your appointment.

2

Download TeamViewer — Install on your Windows laptop. BDT remotes in to run the flash software.

3

Hook Up Battery Charger — Positive first, then negative. Stable voltage is critical.

4

Turn Car to Accessory Mode — Key in ignition or press start without brake. Do not start the engine.

5

Plug In OBDII Cable — Connect to the OBDII port (driver side, under dash).

6

BDT Takes Remote Control — We handle everything. You watch the entire process live.

7

Key Off on Command — When BDT says “turn key off,” do it immediately.

8

Disconnect & Drive — Unplug OBDII, remove charger (negative first, then positive), start the car, enjoy.

Post-Flash Note: You may see a few fault codes after flashing — this is normal. They clear after a short drive cycle.

HOW REMOTE TUNING WORKS

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know if I have the Simos 12.2 ECU?
A: The 2013–2014 GLI was a transition year — some got EA888 Gen 1 (different ECU and file), others got EA888 Gen 3 with Simos 12.2. You must physically verify the ECU label in your engine bay before ordering. See our ECU Verification Guide above. This listing is ONLY for Simos 12.2.

Q: What if my GLI has the EA888 Gen 1 (older) engine?
A: Use our MK6 GTI/GLI 2.0T EA888 Gen 1 listing instead. Different ECU, different file.

Q: What do I need for Stage 1?
A: Nothing required beyond a healthy stock GLI. Intake, intercooler, and fresh plugs are recommended for best results.

Q: Is a high-flow exhaust compatible with Stage 1?
A: No. If you have a high-flow exhaust, you need Stage 2.

Q: What do I need for Stage 2?
A: A high-flow exhaust is required. Intake, intercooler, drivetrain inserts, and DSG tune (if equipped) are highly recommended.

Q: Can I flash at home?
A: Yes. Remote OBDII flashing with full guided support is included. A Windows laptop is required.

Q: What fuel does this tune support?
A: 91 or 93 octane. We tailor maps to your setup and fuel availability. Most customers run 93 octane.

Q: Do I need a Windows computer?
A: Yes. The flashing software requires Windows. Mac is not supported. 50+ Mbps internet and 8GB+ RAM required.

IF YOU WANT YOUR CAR TO SURVIVE, THESE MUST BE DONE!

We want your GLI to live a long, happy tuned life. These intervals come from years of tuning countless EA888 cars. If these aren’t kept up, failures happen — and it won’t be the tune. If you can’t afford the parts, please don’t tune your car.
